Every situation is unique and some are better than others.I’ve heard horror stories of cheating, abuse, and outright disrespect.I’m never left out of family events and they even go out of their way to embrace things from my culture.I experience things in Kuwait I doubt many other Americans do… I wish I could say my life resembles every Westerner married to an Arab but I know that’s not the case.Fortunately my husband does fit comfortably into this part of the culture he appears to have left so far behind. The typical Southern Belle raised as an only child in America. I never had to share anything with anyone — even my space.I was spoiled, wanted for nothing, and had everything. Then I married a man whose immediate family consists of 24 people. Family gatherings take place as often as daily since the entire family lives in very close proximity to one another.
In his culture men have an obligation to truly take care of their wives.Not only are they responsible for us financially, but also our emotional well-being.For a woman to shed a tear and a man be the cause is shameful. Large family gatherings happened once a year during family reunion time and even that came to an abrupt halt when my grandparents died.Some even ‘warned’ me before making the decision to get married.This post is my little attempt at clearing up some of the misconceptions regarding the Arab/American marriages.
